The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
